Volunteers of Pets on Wheels

Pets on Wheels volunteers are our most important asset. They are a special kind of dedicated people who give their time and effort to make life better for someone else.

PURPOSE: A POW volunteer takes pets on a regular weekly visit to isolated residents at nursing homes, adult day care, and assisted living facilites in PG County.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Record volunteer time on time sheet/visit
  • Pet Health Certificate must be updated annually
  • Pets must pass a temperament check by authorized screeners/veternarian
  • Visit with residents, taking time to let them enjoy pet's company
  • Be prepared to clean up after pet
  • Contact facility staff if there are problems observed
  • Stay away from residents/staff who do not appear to like pets
SKILLS REQUIRED:
  • Enjoy working with frail, older people; sometimes mentally or physically disabled
  • Ability to keep pet under control at all times; always on leash; handle emergency situtation immediately
  • Able to promote pet as a friendly animal to residents/staff
